biomasse 2003, 2nd International Expert
and Consumer Fair biomasse 2003, 2nd International Expert and Consumer Fair From June 26th to 29th, 2003, the "2nd International Expert and Consumer Fair on Renewable Raw Materials and Solar Energy" will be held on the fairgrounds in Straubing. The fair is organised by C.A.R.M.E.N.'s subsidiary company biomasse GmbH, in co-operation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sonnenenergie e.V. (DGS) ('German Society for Solar Energy, registered association'). The Bavarian Minister of Agriculture, Josef Miller, has accepted the patronage of the fair. The Bio-Campus, a project of the partnership of convenience of the industrial area of Straubing-Bogen, and C.A.R.M.E.N. will be conducting expert discussions on biodiesel and wood pellets. The 11th C.A.R.M.E.N. Symposium with lectures and excursions runs parallel to the fair. The climate problems and the awareness of the fact that the world is running out of fossil energies show the high significance of our future raw materials supply. Biomass and solar energy can make important contributions the solution of these problems. New technologies and products from renewable raw materials and solar energy are essential keys to that. Politics is on the right path with the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry strongly supporting the production of renewable resources. Thus, the Bavarian government helps to open up new perspectives to farmers, contributes to the protection of the environment, and creates new jobs in rural areas. Gilbert Krapf, manager of biomasse GmbH, called the combination of wood and solar energy ideal: "The perfect energy supply of a house is a wood pellet-fired heating system in the cellar and a solar energy facility on the roof. From May to October, the heat requirements of the house are mainly covered by the solar facility. In case the solar heat should not be sufficient, the pellet-fired heating appliance switches itself on automatically." On more than 10,000 m2 of exhibition space, the visitors to the fair in Straubing can have a look on the latest technology and on current products for modern heat and energy supply from wood and solar energy. The complete product range of starch, fibres, and oils for household and industry will be presented, and information on the various possibilities of ecological building will be provided. At the fist fair in Straubing, the "biom 2001", machine presentations on the open-air ground in front of the exhibition halls attracted the young and the old. In addition to these presentations, expert discussions will now be organised. The discussion on Friday, June 27th, deals with biodiesel as an alternative fuel and its use for commercial vehicles. On Saturday morning, the use of biodiesel for cars is discussed. The afternoon is devoted to wood pellets with respect to technology, possible applications, emissions, and funding possibilities. Parallel to the fair, the 11th C.A.R.M.E.N. Symposium and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Solarenergie meet in the Joseph-von-Fraunhofer-Halle on June 26th and 27th. The symposium will not only offer 23 lectures but also expert discussions, a conference on solar energy, and excursions. Professor Dr. Woo-Hyuk Byun from Korea University in Seoul came with two companions to visit C.A.R.M.E.N. in Straubing on April 24th, 2003, in order to establish contacts and to gather information about modern wood energy utilisation. The activity of the professor of environmental science and ecological engineering centres on forestry policy and landscape management. After a reception at the mayor of Straubing, Reinhold Perlak, Professor Woo-Hyuk Byun informed himself at C.A.R.M.E.N. about the opportunities and the bounds of possibility in the field of wood energy utilisation. Not only various wood fuels but also combustion technologies for houses and heating and cogeneration plants were presented. In addition to that, C.A.R.M.E.N. organised an excursion to a producer of wood pellets and to three manufacturers of wood-fired plants. Widely Travelled: The C.A.R.M.E.N. Exhibition They have already been met by many people - C.A.R.M.E.N. employees travelling to numerous fairs and exhibitions throughout the year, presenting the exhibition "Within the Cycle of Nature". C.A.R.M.E.N. exhibition attendant Walter Wallrapp ranks first, assisted by further C.A.R.M.E.N. employees and particularly by his wife, who puts the finishing touches to the decorative presentation. Plant Officially Opened In Teterow, a production plant of CornPack GmbH & Co. KG for the production of toys, packaging materials, cutlery, plates, and cups was officially opened on April 30th, 2003 (see nawaros® 07/02). With numerous guests present, the Minister for Economic Affairs of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Dr. Otto Ebnet, addressed a cordial welcoming speech to the North Rhine-Westphalian farmer and entrepreneur Hubert Loick and his company CornPack. The Minister noted that Loick was always bubbling over with ideas and in contrast to others also quickly realised them. C.A.R.M.E.N. once more joins in the congratulations to the opening of the new production plant of its member CornPack belongs to Loick AG. This enterprise clearly supports sustainable management and is very successful in doing so: The catering tableware for the skiing world championships 2003 in Switzerland was provided by Loick AG. Alterations to the EU Directive on Biofuels In nawaros ® 04/03 we reported by mistake that the EU directive on biofuels had already been issued. Presently (May 9th, 2003), the legislation process of the directive is still running. It is true that the Council of the European Union had fixed a common point of view on the subject. On March 12th, 2003, the European Parliament approved this common point of view with some alterations in a resolution. Meanwhile, the European Commission submitted its opinion and accepted all alterations. On May 2nd, the Commission communicated its statement to the European Council and the European Parliament. If the European Council now approves all alterations with a qualified majority according to article 251 (3) of the EC Treaty, the directive is regarded as issued. Otherwise, the procedure goes to the mediation committee. For any questions on the state of the legislation process: Karl Hanglberger, e-mail: kh@carmen-ev.de.
12th Biogas Conference (nawaros® 03/03) Prof. Dr. Konrad Scheffer asked us to correct a mistake regarding his lecture on the 12th Biogas Conference of the Fachverband Biogas e.V. ('German Biogas Association, registered association) in Borken. We gladly comply with his request: The project he presented does not take place in Jühnde but on the bioenergy farm in Obernjesa. Moreover, Prof. Dr. Scheffer drew our attention to the fact that the enormous advantage of the mechanical water removal for the thermal utilisation of energy plants particularly lay in the considerable reduction of the N, K, and Cl contents in the fuel.
News from the Competence Centre - Bavarian Minister-President Visiting the Competence Centre - On April 29th, 2003, minister-president Dr. Edmund Stoiber came to visit the Competence Centre for Renewable Raw Materials in Straubing. He was accompanied by the ministers Josef Miller, Hans Zehtmair, and Erwin Huber. Local political representatives were also present, from the mayor of Straubing, Perlak, and the chief administrative officer of the district, Alfred Reisinger, to the member of the Bavarian state parliament, Herbert Ettengruber, and the member of the German Parliament, Ernst Hinsken. On a walk round the Centre, Werner Döller, C.A.R.M.E.N.'s executive secretary, and ministry official Reinhold Erlbeck, chairman of the executive committee of C.A.R.M.E.N., illustrated the variety of renewable raw materials to the minister-president and presented a packet with handicraft materials on the base of maize to him.
